FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Sept. 2, 2020) — The installation’s new Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Recreational Vehicle Park opens today, giving military families and other Department of Defense ID cardholders the option of providing their own lodging as they stay overnight, vacation or temporarily reside on the installation.

“It took a while, but we are very excited to have it open,” said Saikichy Simram, a supervisory recreation specialist with the Outdoor Adventure Center, which runs the park.

Located on First Street, the park includes spaces for 12 RVs with full electric and water hook-ups. RV Park rates are $25 per day, $160 per week or $575 per month, and spaces can be reserved by calling 573.596.4223.

Construction on the park was largely completed last fall and was originally scheduled to open in May but was delayed due to COVID-19 mitigation measures. Crews completed some finishing touches and landscaping work late last week.

FMWR Business and Recreation Chief Katy Carter said the new park will meet the goal of providing temporary lodging for an important population.

“The genesis of this … was to serve our military families while they are PCSing, offering them a safe and affordable location where they could stay and enjoy the comfort of their own RV,” Carter said.

Offering RV facilities is nothing new for FMWR, which has had an RV park at its Lake of the Ozarks Recreational Area for some time. Carter said DoD ID cardholders are welcome to reserve spots at the new RV park on post for recreational purposes, as well.

“Obviously, if people want to come for recreational purposes, that’s great,” she said. “There are no restrictions on who can use the park, other than (access) at the gate. Really, this is an option we wanted to provide for our transient families and to help the people who are here short-term.”

FMWR is promoting the park’s central location, which puts customers within a few minutes’ drive of the post’s hunting and fishing areas, Main Exchange, commissary, shoppettes and more.
