FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Nov. 10, 2022) — On Nov. 11, we recognize the service, sacrifice and commitment of more than 19 million individuals, our veterans, who have served in the United States military. There are many ways to honor our veterans, including attending events, lending a helping hand or simply saying “thank you” to those who have served before us.

Before the long weekend, every leader – military and civilian – should talk with those in their care about knowing their teammates and avoiding high-risk behaviors and preventable accidents.

With archery season ending, firearm and muzzleloader seasons begin soon. Talk to your teams about hunting safety. Hunters should communicate with loved ones about their plans and locations, be prepared for inclement weather, always remain disciplined with weapons, and follow all applicable state and Fort Leonard Wood laws and regulations. When weapons are not in use, they must be safely stored.

For non-hunters, watch for increased wildlife movement on roadways, especially near dawn and dusk. Missouri ranks among the nation’s top states for vehicular collisions with deer, causing damage, injury or death. Adjust to foot traffic and additional parked vehicles near roads and training areas.

Whether on or off post, vehicular safety is key. Do not break the speed limit and lower speed when necessary based on road, weather and environmental conditions.  More than two-thirds of Missouri’s fatalities this year were not wearing a seatbelt; always buckle up and ensure all within your care do the same. Do not drive distracted or under the influence. Maintain supplies in the event of unexpected weather or driving situations.

Continue to know those in your care and teammates to your left and right.  Maintain a positive and inclusive environment, where people know and understand one another’s plans, living situations and families. Help them achieve goals and persevere over challenges by caring and providing available resources. With the change in seasons and approaching holidays, stay connected. Never leave a teammate behind.
