The first ceremony was the promotion of Col. Michael Harvey to brigadier general before he assumed command of the 102nd later that morning. Following the promotion, Brig. Gen. Miyako Schanely was recognized for her dedication to the division in an awards ceremony where she was presented a Legion of Merit.

“It’s truly been my privilege and pleasure to serve and to serve with all of you in the Ozark Division and the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence,” Schanely said.

Later, three brigades uncased their colors, establishing a headquarters element here within the 102nd. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd brigades, made up of engineer, chemical and military police Soldiers, were relocated from Oklahoma, Minnesota and Connecticut.

The final piece of the morning was the change of command of the 102nd, where Schanely passed the mantle of leadership to Harvey.

Maj. Gen. A. C. Roper, commander of the 80th Training Command, who presided over the ceremony, thanked Schanely for her dedicated service to the Army and the Army Reserve.

“Brig. Gen. Schanely, I want to congratulate you and personally thank you for a job well done,” he said. “Your leadership, hard work and untiring efforts during your tenure resulted in significant measures of progress in the division. It has been my honor and privilege to serve with you in this capacity, and I know you will do amazing things in your new assignment.”

Maj. Gen. Kent Savre, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, echoed Roper’s remarks.

“When I look at Miyako and try to characterize her, to me she is an incredibly capable leader, a strategic thinker, unbelievably committed and she’s a good friend,” Savre said.

Schanely spoke about the history of the 102nd, focusing on the high caliber of Soldiers who have served within its ranks during World War II and into today.

“As you look back on the history of this Ozark Division, from those heroes of World War II, to the heroes you see standing on the field in front of you here today and the professionals that they represent in their respective formations, all these professionals wearing the Ozark patch have been of that high caliber,” she said. “It’s been a privilege to be a part of that.”

Harvey, the newly promoted brigadier general, thanked Schanely for what she brought to the 102nd.

“You’ve left me with this great organization, so it’s going to be a challenge to get them to achieve even greater heights,” he said. “I accept that challenge, but it’s also a reflection of all the great leadership you provided to the 102nd.”

Schanely will next assume command of the 416th Theater Engineer Command in Illinois.

Roper, while welcoming Harvey to the 80th Training Command, referenced what he hopes Harvey will bring the the 102nd.

“I personally know that you have a distinguished history of service and a reputation of success that brought you to this command,” Roper said. “I charge you to maintain and improve upon the high standard set forth by your predecessors.”

Savre said he looks forward to what he and Harvey can accomplish.

“(Harvey) has a wealth of experience,” Savre said. “He’s been tested in multiple leadership positions and in combat. Mike, you’ve got my complete trust and confidence. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead.”

Harvey thanked those who have helped him reach this point in his career, and humbly accepted the challenges from Roper and Savre.

“I’m humbled, grateful and thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve our nation, but most importantly, to serve alongside the Soldiers of the 102nd Training Division. It’s a privilege and an honor, and I don’t take that lightly,” he said. “I’m so proud to be a member of such a great team. I promise I’ll give you 100 percent.”

The 102nd Training Division is the only Total Army School System division in the Army Reserve that trains Soldiers to be engineers, military police and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialists.
