FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Jan. 11, 2018) — The Fort Leonard Wood Tax Center opened Monday, and a ribbon
cutting to signify the start of the 2018 tax season was held Thursday.
The tax center is located on the first floor of Building 315, 316 Missouri Avenue, at the intersection of Missouri and
Headquarters avenues on post.
The center provides individual income tax services for active-duty military, their families, retirees and reserve
component members on orders of 29 days or more to Fort Leonard Wood.
Hours of operation are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Appointments can be made by
calling the tax center at 573.596.1040.
Clients should bring: military identification, their previous year’s tax return, Social Security cards for themselves and any
dependents being claimed, W-2’s, 1099’s, interest statements, proof of health insurance, a voided check or bank routing
and account numbers, a power of attorney, if required; a completed client intake form provided by the tax center and any
other related documents to justify itemized deductions.
According to Capt. Daniel Gaffney, Fort Leonard Wood Tax Center officer in charge, the center’s staff has completed
certification and is qualified to the advanced level on the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. “The training
was very thorough,” he said. “After the training, we continued to revisit the lessons learned during the training and
applied those lessons to several practice labs.”
The Fort Leonard Wood Tax Center has 10 Soldiers, four civilian volunteers and two civilian employees working to file
returns for customers. Last year, the Fort Leonard Wood Tax Center processed more than 6,000 returns and nearly $7
million in refunds.
The tax center, operated by the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, is scheduled to be open through April 17, the end of
tax season.
