FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (November 4, 2026) – Traditional roast turkey is on top of the menu as Fort Leonard Wood plans to host its Thanksgiving Day celebration Nov. 26, 2026, in Army Warrior Restaurants across the installation, with meals for thousands of service members, as well as a specific time and location for Department of War ID cardholders, Gold Star families, veterans and their families.

“Thanksgiving reminds us that sometimes home is not a place, it’s the people sitting around the table with you. For many of our Soldiers, this may be the first holiday they’ve ever spent away from family,” said Beverly Leggett, Installation Food Program manager. “We can’t replace home, but we can make sure they know they’re part of a military family that is grateful for their service and proud of what they’re doing.”

Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Chief of Staff Col. Jeremy Kerfoot fondly remembers his first Thanksgiving away from family while deployed.

“Spending the time with my platoon was memorable since we all shared stories of what we were thankful for and our Thanksgiving meal traditions,” he said. “It put a pause, for a moment, at where we were and let us relax and share camaraderie.”

Kerfoot said the importance of the event is twofold.

“For many, Thanksgiving dinner is one of the biggest feasts that families share in and providing it at our (warrior restaurants) helps to create an environment for that continued tradition,” he said. “Another reason, and probably most important, is the celebration of thankfulness for the Soldiers who are gathered together – for a moment – to fellowship as a team, an Army Family. No matter blood or duty, family is forged in many ways. Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to remember and experience that.”

According to Leggett, plans are set to serve approximately 12,000 Thanksgiving meals during the lunchtime celebrations, and 28,000-plus meals throughout the day – using 4,700 pounds of turkey, 4,200 pounds of shrimp cocktail, 6,300 pounds of prime rib and 15 different kinds of assorted cakes and pies with all the accompaniments.

“From the first turkey placed in the oven to the final dessert served, months of planning and coordination ensure every guest enjoys a memorable Thanksgiving meal,” Leggett said. “The menu includes herb-crusted salmon, oven-roasted strip loin steak or prime rib with au jus, baked ham with cranberry glaze, and a vegetable lasagna option.”

Guests will also enjoy an array of classic holiday sides, including mashed potatoes; baked macaroni and cheese; savory bread dressing; cornbread dressing; candied sweet potatoes; roasted asparagus; herb green beans; and corn.

“From traditional favorites to premium entrée selections, this year’s meal is designed to deliver a true Thanksgiving experience,” she added.

According to Leggett, about 850 food-service employees are scheduled to prepare the feast and serve it alongside senior leadership.

Adding to the Thanksgiving experience, food-service employees from each warrior restaurant will be decorating their dining areas.

“Dining facility teams are already planning festive holiday decorations to help create a welcoming and memorable Thanksgiving atmosphere,” she said. “From seasonal decor to carefully prepared serving displays, every effort is made to transform the warrior restaurants into a place where Soldiers, families, veterans, and guests can gather and enjoy the spirit of the holiday.”

Leggett said her team understands that providing a Thanksgiving meal is much more than just serving food.

“It’s about creating a sense of belonging and reminding Soldiers that they are part of a community that cares about them,” she said.

According to Leggett, the Thanksgiving Day meal for DOW ID cardholders, retirees, Gold Star families and veterans with access to the installation will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Celiz Hall Army Warrior Restaurant, Bldg. 6111, located on Indiana Avenue.

“The Army serves as a family, and Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to bring that family together,” Leggett said. “By welcoming veterans, retirees, Gold Star families, military dependents, and other members of our community, we recognize that military service is supported by countless individuals beyond those currently wearing the uniform.”

The Thanksgiving holiday meal rate is $11.85 for all visitors, except spouses and other dependents of service members E-4 and below, who pay the discounted holiday meal rate of $8.75.

“Years from now, they may not remember every item on the menu, but I hope they remember how this community made them feel,” Leggett said. “That’s what Thanksgiving is really about.”

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (October 21, 2026) – Leaders of the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence uncased the guidon for the U.S. Army Civil Support Training Activity during a ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 20, 2026.

Brig. Gen. Alexander Lovasz, MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, and CSTA Director David Wilcox took part in the ceremony, which marked the transfer of the CSTA from the U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command to MSCoE under the Training and Transformation Command as part of the Army Transformation Initiative.

According to Lt. Col. Roberto Sanchez, CSTA’s chief of operations, the CSTA trains, evaluates and conducts validation exercises for technical support forces, or specialized response units, throughout U.S. Northern Command’s area of responsibility. This work supports the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Response Enterprise, also known as the CRE.

“By direction of Headquarters, Department of the Army, CSTA provides a single Title 10 CBRN collective training capability that supports all components of the Army,” Sanchez said. “CSTA is responsible for training and evaluating both the Title 10 and Title 32 components of the CRE. This includes pre-mission assumption training, sustainment training, periodic validations and training development support.”

Units that make up the CRE are the Weapons of Mass Destruction – Civil Support Teams, CBRN Enhanced Response Force Packages, Homeland Response Forces, Defense CBRN Response Force, and the Command and Control CBRN Response Element.

Those components are “general and technical support forces tasked to respond to domestic CBRN incidents through a scalable framework of force packages supporting civil authorities,” Sanchez said.

CSTA focuses its training and evaluation of those specialized units on five primary mission areas: Mass Casualty Decontamination, Technical Decontamination, Emergency Medical Care, CBRN Reconnaissance and Surveillance, and Urban Search and Rescue.

Due to the complexity and nature of those missions, the CSTA is a critical element for the CRE units, Sanchez added.

“Technical support forces operate in hot and warm zones, and other contaminated environments, requiring specialized training in the use of commercial off‑the‑shelf equipment, and, in accordance with 29 Code of Federal Regulations, are required to possess specific skills, capabilities and equipment to perform their missions safely and effectively,” Sanchez said. “Through training and evaluation, CSTA helps provide those necessary and crucial skills and capabilities.”

CSTA history

CSTA began providing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training and evaluation support to Army elements as early as 1998, when the 1st and 5th Army G3 Weapons of Mass Destruction Divisions were tasked to provide support to the initial Army National Guard Rapid Assessment and Initial Detection teams, which were later transformed into the WMD Civil Support Teams. In 2004, the 1st and 5th Army G3 WMD Divisions were combined to form the Civil Support Readiness Directorate, a subordinate staff directorate under U.S. Army North. The CSRD was tasked with training and evaluating military CBRN forces against terrorist use of WMD agents in the homeland.

On April 1, 2009, HQDA established the CSTA as a separate Title 10 collective training capability available to all components of the Army, and it was assigned as a separate subordinate element of ARNORTH, the Army Service Component Command to Northern Command.

“This requirement became part of NORTHCOM’s mission to defend the homeland, and CSTA has developed as the Army’s go-to CBRN collective training and evaluation capability,” Sanchez said.

By Direction of HQDA, and as a part of the Army Transformation Initiative, U.S. Army North, U.S. Army South and Forces Command were combined to become the U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command. FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (October 15, 2026) – Week 3 of U.S. Army Basic Combat Training pushed more than 100 Fort Leonard Wood recruits past their fears, transforming civilian mindsets into the Soldier spirit through a battery of milestone training events.

Company A, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Chemical Brigade trainees began the week honing their buddy team tactics and drill and ceremony precision before conquering the Confidence Course, CS Gas Chamber and Warrior Tower.

According to Sgt. 1st Class Trevor Gibbs, Company A senior drill sergeant, during buddy team tactics training the platoons organized into squads to navigate themselves and critical equipment across an actively evolving bridge structure while maintaining zero ground contact.

“We give trainees a scenario and allotted amount of time to meet mission requirements, such as bringing a barrel across a bridge that is one plank short,” Gibbs said. “It forces them to communicate and work together to continuously move people across with the barrel while the planks are also being moved to complete the bridge.”

He said the task builds critical thinking skills and teaches trainees to unite their diverse capabilities to overcome obstacles and complete the mission.

At the Confidence Course Oct. 7, 2026, platoons dispersed throughout Training Area 97 to negotiate high-risk obstacles. Key stations included high-altitude, multi-stage towers; low-crawl tire pits under barbed wire; reverse-incline rung descents; rope-swing log clearances; and sliding face-first during a steep rope-bridge.

Gibbs described the Confidence Course as a series of counterintuitive physical challenges that force recruits to think outside the box and push past mental limitations they place on their own physical abilities.

“Many of the obstacles feel unnatural, like crawling face first down a wooden ladder,” Gibbs said. “Once they accomplish the obstacles, they leave the training area with a sense of pride and achievement.”

The next day, under a relentless and uncharacteristic October heat, trainees donned their M50 Joint Service General Purpose Masks and entered the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training area known as the CS Gas Chamber.

For Gibbs, a 74D chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist, the gas chamber stood out as a highlight of the Week 3 training schedule.

“Nobody freaked out or had to go through the gas chamber a second time. They did well,” Gibbs said. “I appreciate the depth of this training event because there is a physical aspect to the gas chamber when they break the seal of their masks, but it is mostly a mental challenge.”

As Gibbs and 1st Lt. Marquis Smith, Company A’s executive officer, vaporized CS tear gas tablets over the heating elements, the chamber filled with a stinging mist and trainees executed pressure-testing drills – such as running in place and scanning left and right – to prove they could function under a pending threat.

“I tried to pay attention as much as I could,” said Pfc. Yasmine Estevez, a Company A trainee who is pushing through BCT on her path to becoming an 88M motor transport operator.

Then the real test of discipline began as recruits were ordered to break the seal on their protective masks.

“Keep ’em above your nose, trainees,” roared the chamber cadre over the coughing of the recruits.

That first breath of gas inside the chamber marked a turning point for Estevez, proving she could survive the worst and keep pushing forward.

“That is when my composure went out the window, it was just survival instincts at that point. I couldn’t breathe or see,” Estevez said. “But then I realized I could hear the instructions, so I did my best to follow them and make my way out of the chamber.”

As the trainees stumbled out into the fresh air, their drill sergeants were waiting to herd them forward, bark instructions and motivate them to open their eyes and walk off the gas.

“Open your eyes. Flap your arms. Don’t touch your face,” yelled drill sergeants.

While the gas chamber is an experience few eagerly anticipate, Estevez was grateful to have confronted the training head-on, noting that she felt incredibly proud to have overcome the trial.

Estevez said the gas chamber was challenging, but less daunting than she anticipated.

She noted that her CBRN training experience was built on a foundation of trust, because being in the chamber with Gibbs and Smith demonstrated that her leadership does not just command – “they are facing the same battles they are preparing us to fight.”

Gibbs agreed.

“Leadership is from the front,” he said. “I am in the chamber with them because I am never going to require a trainee to attempt any task I would not do myself. That is part of our drill sergeant creed.”

Recruits capped off Week 3 at Training Area 136 by mastering the Swiss seat – a hand-tied rope harness – before executing a 47-foot rappel down Warrior Tower.

Company A trainee, Pfc. Cheyenne Malone, in BCT to become a 12N horizontal construction engineer, said she enjoyed rappelling and wished she could go again.

“There were multiple drill sergeants checking our Swiss seats, so I felt confident I had tied mine correctly,” Malone said. “I was pretty nervous when I got up there and looked down, but as soon as my feet were on the ledge, I felt ready. I was hyped. It was awesome.”

Gibbs said during Week 3, trainees also sat through a basic map reading class that served as a vital precursor to Week 4, when trainees transition away from the cantonment area to tackle land navigation and the Hammer Field Training Exercise.

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (October 13, 2026) – Fort Leonard Wood has a program in place to prepare and respond to destructive weather incidents with minimal impact on the installation. Called Destructive Weather Mitigation Operations, or DWMO, the program’s purpose is to get the installation back to normal operations as quickly as possible with minimal impacts to training and the workforce.

“The DWMO program is important because it lets the community know how they are going to be notified and what we are doing to get (the installation) back to normal operations,” said Timothy Mann, Installation Operations Center chief with Fort Leonard Wood’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. “It also allows them to prepare their families and themselves to stay safe for such events.”

DPTMS Installation Emergency Manager Mathew Mertz said informing the Fort Leonard Wood community enables residents and employees to prepare for and remain safe during destructive weather events, such as snow and ice.

“When informed, the community is able to take appropriate actions: obtain necessary resources if they are unable to leave their homes; know where warming shelters are located due to loss of power; allow additional time for their daily commute or telework if road conditions are too hazardous to travel safely and stay off the roads during road recovery and clearing operations,” Mertz said.

According to Mann, DWMO is a team effort between many on-post organizations including meteorologists at Forney Airfield, the Department of Public Works, Balfour Beatty, the Directorate of Emergency Services, Range Control and DPTMS.

Mertz said the meteorologists at Forney Airfield monitor the weather 24/7 to provide the community with real-time weather changes and impacts to the installation.

“The meteorologists specialize in forecasting for Fort Leonard Wood, whereas the National Weather Service focuses on area weather,” Mertz said. “This information is essential for commanders to understand and plan for potential weather impacts to their family members, service members and their training mission.”

According to Mertz, there are many ways for the Fort Leonard Wood community to receive weather related information and warnings.

“Hazardous weather notifications are provided to the Fort Leonard Wood community via ALERT!, giant voice speakers, Public Affairs notifications using social media and local radio stations,” Mertz said. “Common Access Card holders, their family members, long-term contractors, private organizations and tenants on the installation can also receive notifications via the ALERT! Mass Warning Notifications System.”

Mann said the ALERT! MWNS allows notifications to be sent through text, computer pop-ups, telephonically and email to everyone on the installation.

“It is important to keep your phone numbers and email addresses up to date and instructions for setting up ALERT! Notifications can be found on Fort Leonard Wood’s Weather and Hazardous Conditions page,” Mann said.

Missourians can also utilize the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Traveler Information Map to view current road conditions within the state. In addition to the average annual snowfall of 8 to 24 inches, MoDOT officials say freezing rain and ice can also have a significant impact on travel.

According to Mann, motorists should prepare for winter weather by ensuring their vehicles have been maintained and take appropriate actions while driving on snowy or icy roads.

“Ensure your vehicle has a winter weather kit in it,” Mann said. “Clear your vehicle of snow and ice, allow extra time for travel, reduce speed, increase distance between vehicles and avoid sudden breaking or accelerating.”

Mertz agrees and adds that 4-wheel drive vehicles do not operate any better than any other vehicles on ice covered roads.

Mann points out that it is the time of year when a lot of wildlife is on the roadways, especially during early mornings and evenings. He also warned of other dangerous conditions motorists might encounter during inclement weather.

“Other hazards during hazardous weather are fallen trees and branches or downed power lines,” Mann said. “Be aware of your surroundings and take it slow and easy.”

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (October 8, 2026) – Fort Leonard Wood trainees with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Chemical Brigade, crushed the final hurdles of Yellow Phase as they pushed through Week 2 of U.S. Army Basic Combat Training.

This week, more than 100 recruits transitioned to the classroom to lock down lifesaving combat first aid, tactical communication and unmanned aerial systems capabilities.

Recruits executed three days of U.S. Army first aid training in tactical combat casualty care, commonly called TCCC, teaching them to manage hemorrhages, clear airways and coordinate tactical field care under fire.

“They practice the proper techniques on how to carry their battle buddies from danger, open airways and also how to properly apply tourniquets,” said Staff Sgt. Eber Pena, drill sergeant with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment.

During the Basic Military Communications course Oct. 2, 2026, recruits got hands on with the RT-1523 advanced system improvement program single channel ground and airborne radio system.

“The man-pack radio setup is the most basic form of short- to medium-range radio equipment that the average squad has for communications in any theater of operations or training environment,” said Sgt. Anthony Pisterzi Jr., Radio Communication instructor with the Combat Training Company. “All Soldiers learn how to use it because such a system is necessary for transmitting medical evacuations, indirect fire, spot reports and situation reports, as well as general battlefield coordination.”

Pisterzi emphasized that trainees must master this information because it is a fundamental task required of all Soldiers – broad proficiency reduces single points of failure and preserves unit communications capability if specialized communications personnel become unavailable.

Pena concurred and said Week 2 is an ideal time to reinforce effective communication as a foundational skill Soldiers must develop.

“Communication is key throughout BCT,” Pena added.

Pvt. Brandon Roca, who is slated to become a 12N Horizontal Construction Engineer, said he initially expected BCT to focus on physical conditioning and motivational training. Instead, he found himself challenged by the depth of academic investment required to master modern Soldiering skills.

“When people said basic combat training would be a mental game, I thought they meant staying emotionally strong. I had no idea I’d be spending this much time in a classroom,” Roca said.

He described the tactical radios as “walkie-talkies on steroids” admitting that he found himself taking detailed notes and genuinely enjoying the fast-paced class.

“I like to read my notes at the end of the day. It helps me understand and retain the information,” Roca said. “My goal is to leave this classroom knowing I can pick up this tactical radio and use it if I ever need it.”

Later that afternoon during UAS block of instruction, Pena said trainees were introduced to the critical role drones play on the modern battlefield, emphasizing how these technologies have fundamentally revolutionized warfare.

“They basically changed the whole battlefield and everything that we once thought we knew,” Pena said, and this course directly applies lessons learned from recent conflicts to prepare new Soldiers for the realities of modern warfare.

According to Staff Sgt. Casandra Moura, Company A drill sergeant, trainees were also introduced to the fundamental Army skill of land navigation this week.

“They learned how to plot points, shoot azimuths, and measure distance from one point to another, and plan their route of attack,” Moura said.

Outside the classroom, trainees tested their endurance through daily physical conditioning, completed a diagnostic fitness evaluation, and began translating discipline into action by learning drill and ceremony procedures.

Pena said physical readiness training in Week 2 concentrated on biomechanical form and technique, ensuring trainees maximize their athletic development while proactively mitigating training-related injuries.

“That way they don’t injure themselves during high intensity training,” Pena said.

Moura agreed, noting her focus remains on encouraging trainees to break through psychological barriers and redefine their physical limitations.

“I remind them that they are here for a reason. And to keep that reason, their ‘why’ in the back of their head,” Moura said. “I remind them that their body can do amazing things they never expected it to do.”

This week recruits also conquered the obstacles of Fort Leonard Wood’s Physical Endurance Course, and took a critical step in Chemical, Biological, Radiologic and Nuclear defense, receiving their frontline shield against toxic threats – the M50 Joint Service General Purpose Mask.

Moving into Week 3, Red Phase, trainees will face some of Fort Leonard Wood’s most mentally and physically demanding milestones: navigating the collaborative Confidence Course, conquering the gas chamber and the high-altitude descent of Warrior Tower.
