FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (July 5, 2018) — Fort Leonard Wood and Missouri State Highway Patrol emergency personnel recovered the body of a missing Marine at approximately 9:20 a.m., today, July 5, from the Big Piney River on Fort Leonard Wood.

According to Fort Leonard Wood’s Directorate of Emergency Services, the Marine went missing at approximately 4:25 p.m., July 4, after being swept away by the river’s current.

Search and rescue teams from Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, St. Robert and the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in attempting to locate the missing Marine on July 4. Search operations were suspended at approximately 9:18 p.m., July 4, and were resumed by Fort Leonard Wood DES and the Missouri State Highway Patrol at approximately 7:30 a.m., July 5, according to Fort Leonard Wood’s DES.

The identification of the Marine, who was assigned to the Marine Corps Detachment on Fort Leonard Wood, is being withheld until next-of-kin notification is made.

The incident is under investigation by the Fort Leonard Wood DES and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
