FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (April 15, 2019) – The following Fort Leonard Wood announcements are for the week of April 15 through April 19.

Congratulations to Sapper Team 17: Capt. John Baer and 1st Lt. Terence Hughes, with the 39th Brigade Engineer Battalion, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Captain Baer and Lieutenant Hughes took top honors in the 13th Annual Lt. Gen. Robert B. Flowers Best Sapper Competition held April 8-10th on post. April 15 – May 11

Tickets go on sale April 15 for “A King’s First Queen,” Mother-Son Dance. The dance will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11th at the Pershing Community Center. The event includes a special evening with a live DJ, buffet dinner, dancing and fun activities. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. to provide Moms and Sons with the option for a professional photo opportunity at an additional fee. General admission ticket cost is $20 per person and can be purchased online at the Armed Services YMCA Fort Leonard Wood website, in person at the YMCA Building 493, or by calling 573.329.4513.

April 18

A Change of Commandant ceremony for the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School is planned for 10 a.m. April 18 at the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Plaza. Brig. Gen. Antonio Munera will transfer responsibility for the Chemical Corps Regiment to Colonel Daryl Hood. The Inclement weather location is Nutter Field House.

The 2019 Annual Installation Volunteer Recognition Ceremony is planned from 2:30 to 4 p.m. April 18 at the Pershing Community Center. Fort Leonard Wood will highlight the contributions made by our remarkable Army Volunteer Corps at this event. Priority seating will be given to those who pre-registered for this event.

April 19 – Registration deadline for LETR

The annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run is planned for 9 a.m. May 18. Registration for this event, which is open to active and retired Law Enforcement Officers, closes April 19. The run will start from the St. Robert Walmart and conclude at the 795th Military Police Battalion PT Track. Registration fee is $10. Everyone is welcome to cheer as the runners pass by.

April 20

Piney Valley Golf Course plans to hold a Ladies Golf Clinic at 9 a.m. April 20 and 27. Participants can learn the game of golf and is open to beginners to advanced golfers. Clubs, balls and instructions will be provided. This event is free and open to golfers 18 and older. For more information, contact the Golf Course at 573-329-4770.

A Pokemon Tournament is scheduled for 2 p.m. April 20 at the Middle School Teen Center located at 2538 Young Street, Building 9625. The event is open to registered youth in grades six through 12. Participants must register for this event by April 18. For more information, call 573.596.0209.

April 21

An Easter Sunrise Service is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Sunday, April 21. This event will be held at the Main Post Chapel.

April 26

In combination with the National Earth Day observance, Fort Leonard Wood will host an Earth Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26 at Nutter Field House. This year’s theme is “Sustain the Environment to Secure the Mission,” and includes many earth-friendly information and activity booths. Free household e-cycling will be offered during the event. Also, as part of Earth Day, a Household E-Cycling Event is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26 at the Nutter Field House parking lot. E-cycle old computers, printers, fax machines, televisions, audio equipment, cell phones, microwaves and household batteries. No government or business electronics will be accepted. April 29- May 2

The U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School plans to host the 2019 Best CBRN Warrior Competition April 29-May 2 on Fort Leonard Wood. A maximum of 25, two-person teams will be accepted for the competition.

May 8-9

A Soldier For Life – Transition Assistance Program, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes, is scheduled to hold a career summit May 8 and 9. A networking reception will be held May 8 at the Pershing Community Center from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Workshops and a career fair are slated to take place the following day, May 9, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Nutter Field House. May 8-10

The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood Best Warrior Competition is scheduled for May 8-10 here. This competition will identify one Drill Sergeant of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Soldier of the Year, Joint Service NCO of the Year, and Joint Service Junior Enlisted Service Member of the Year. The NCOY and SOY will represent Fort Leonard Wood at the Training and Doctrine Command Best Warrior Competition.

June 1

Registration for the 20th annual Volkslauf 10K Fun Run, is officially open. The “extreme 10K event,” hosted annually by the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment, is scheduled for June 1 on Fort Leonard Wood. Pre-registration will remain open through May 15. After that, teams and individuals can still register, but fees will increase. As of April 11, the Garrison Housing Division reports the following work order status since the Feb. 27 housing town hall: 1,017 work orders submitted, 872 work orders completed and 145 work orders open with appointments scheduled. In addition to being the Month of the Military Child, April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. One of the best prevention tools for child abuse is a parent or caregiver’s ability to teach their children about how to protect themselves. Conversations about safety are not a one and done type of conversation.
