FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (May 3, 2019) — The following Fort Leonard Wood announcements are for the week of May 6-10.
The Best CBRN Warrior Competition was held April 29 through May 2 on post. Congratulations to Staff Sgts. Donjuan Brown and Jarrod Gasiorowski, representing Team 2, from the 84th Chemical Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, for being named this year’s 2019 Best CBRN Warrior Competition first-place winners. Great job to all who competed and supported this year’s event.
May 7
Fort Leonard Wood plans to conduct an all-hands exercise of its emergency response team from about 8 a.m. to noon on post and entry/exit to and from the installation may be delayed for short periods during the exercise. Thank you in advance for your patience.
May 8
The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood will host the Best Warrior Competition May 8 through May 10. This competition will identify one Drill Sergeant of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Soldier of the Year, Joint Service NCO of the Year, and Joint Service Junior Enlisted Service Member of the Year. The NCO and Soldier of the Year will represent Fort Leonard Wood at the Training and Doctrine Command Best Warrior Competition. Good luck to all competitors!
A Strong B.A.N.D.S. Story Walk is planned for 12:30 p.m. May 8 at the Bruce C. Clarke Community Library. Take a walk around the library quad during story time, while reading a book page by page. This is a great chance to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and read the adventures of “Hector the Hummingbird” by Nicholas John Frith. For more information, contact the library at 573-563-4113.
May 8-9
The 5th annual Hiring Our Heroes Career Summit takes place May 8th and 9th. The two-day summit includes a networking reception for job seekers from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8th, at the Pershing Community Center. Industry workshops and resume writing resources will be available from 8 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, in Nutter Field House, followed by a Career Fair for employers and job seekers from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The event is open to all service members, veterans and military spouses. Service members who will transition in the next 24 months are encouraged to attend. Job seekers are encouraged bring copies of their resume and dress in business professional attire. The General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital has a Lunch and Learn scheduled for noon May 9, in the hospital’s dining facility. The topic is Heat Illness Prevention. National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day in May. This year it is observed on Friday, May 10. On Military Spouse Appreciation Day we honor the contributions and sacrifices made by military spouses. Their commitment and support help to keep our country safe.
The USO on Fort Leonard Wood is hosting “Craft Time for Mom” from 5 to 7 p.m. May 10, at the USO. Registration is open now to the first 25 families to sign up. Bring your Military ID card to register in person at the USO. This event is geared towards children making a surprise gift to present to their Mom on Mother’s Day. “A King’s First Queen,” Mother-Son Dance is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Pershing Community Center. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. General admission ticket cost is $20 per person and can be purchased online at the Armed Services YMCA Fort Leonard Wood website, in person at the YMCA Building 493, or by calling 573.329.4513.
May 15 pre-registration deadline
Registration for the 20th annual Volkslauf 10K Fun Run, is officially open. The “extreme 10K event,” hosted annually by the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment, is scheduled for June 1 on Fort Leonard Wood. Pre-registration will remain open through May 15. After that, teams and individuals can still register, but fees will increase. Youth Sports and Fitness Volleyball Registration is currently open through May 17 at Parent Outreach Services Building 470, Room 1126. Volleyball registration is open to youth ages 7-15 and cost $45 per participant, which includes a team uniform top and a medallion. The 2nd annual Exceptional Family Member Program Fishing Fun Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 at the Little Wood Pond. The Little Wood Pond will be stocked with sunfish and catfish for some family fun. Limited fishing poles and bait will be available. The event is weather permitting. June 1
The annual Springfield Cardinals Military Appreciation Night at Hammons Field is slated for June 1 when the Cardinals host the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. The event presented by Infuze Credit Union and Fort Leonard Wood and includes a Saturday night fireworks celebration. Game time is 6:10 p.m. and gates open at 5:10. Ticket information will be provided in the coming days.
July 12
Soldiers with more than 16 years of service who want to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill to a dependent must do so before July 12, or risk losing the ability to transfer education benefits.
